CONTEXT
Booksmart (2019), a funny and fresh coming-of-age comedy.
—
Directed by Olivia Wilde, Booksmart is an endearing and witty movie centered around friendship. Graduating high school seniors and academic overachievers Amy and Molly try and cram four years of missed fun into one chaotic night.
OBJECTIVE
To create a title sequence capturing the wild spirit and liveliness of Booksmart.
—
The title sequence will introduce viewers to the brilliant creators and actors behind the movie while settling them into the movie's bright atmosphere and energy.

STYLE
I wanted to channel the joy of graduation and the teenage years, choosing a fast-paced and energetic direction.

STORYBOARD + ANIMATIC
I plotted out my vision first, sketching stills for my story followed by an animatic to gauge pacing.

SOLUTION
The final title sequence is enthusiastic and spirited, capturing the heart and the wit of the movie.
—
Fun illustrations referencing aspects of the movie are paired with a catchy pop anthem by artist Lizzo. Everything works together to deliver an entertaining introduction that leaves the viewer wanting more and ready for the adventure they're about to embark on.

TAKEAWAYS
Be mindful of pacing.
—
When it comes to motion, the fourth dimension of time is added. With Booksmart's title sequence, I had to balance enough time for the text to be read alongside quick, snappy animations to depict the movie's energy and fast pace.
